Marketing with Pinterest
Pinterest is by far the biggest money earner for my store. I get around 10-15% of my sales directly from Pinterest traffic. This post will endeavor to give you some tips to using Pinterest to market your business.
Signing Up
Pinterest requires all sellers, or all people who will be using their accounts to sell a product or service, to sign up for a business account. By having a business account, you gain access to the ability to see how much traffic you are getting and which pins are performing well.
Pinning and My Boards
Once you have your Pinterest account, the number one thing you need to do is start pinning! First, I recommend creating a single store board. Post all your pins and blog posts to this board first. Then, create boards that are specific to your products. For me, I am in a Kindergarten market, so I have a lot of themed and seasonal boards just for Kindergarten. I also break down subjects, like math, into addition boards, subtraction boards, etc. I have about 50 very specific topic boards and 4-5 more general and broad boards. I did not make all my boards at once, but as I had new content to pin.
Creating Pins
Well, I know I should be pinning, but how to I make pins? When you are just starting out, simply pinning from your store page can be beneficial. You can also take time to create a pin using the website called Canva. With Canva you can sign up for a free account and create pins based on their Pinterest template. I make all my pins this way. Once you have your pins made, and pinned into your main store board, you can start filling your more specific boards.
How to Upload My Pins
So now you have a few pins made and now you are wondering how to upload your new pins. First, you need to click on the add a pin option. Once you click there, a window will pop up where you can upload your pin's picture (the one you made yourself or created on Canva) then you need to copy and paste the product URL. Once you do this, another screen will pop up that shows the pin on the left and your boards on the right. Below the pin is an area to type your product description. Make sure this description is filled with keywords that flow together in natural sentences. You can also add hashtags to your description. Make sure they accurately describe your pin. Once you have your descriptions written, you will choose the board to pin it to. Make sure you pin it to your store board first! This is very important and I will explain why later.
How to Build My Pinterest Boards
So, not you have a few pins into your store board and you are wondering what to do next...
Now you have your pins in your store board, you are repinning your pins from your store board to your more specific boards and now you want to get potential buyers to find your work.
There are also collaborative boards on Pinterest where you can gain more reach for your pins. To join these boards, simply follow the instructions under the board's description. If you follow the board's rules, they can be a good way to bring additional traffic to your store.
I mentioned above that I use a program to schedule my pins. Please click THIS LINK to learn more about this program!

How to Build My Pinterest Boards
So, not you have a few pins into your store board and you are wondering what to do next...
- Repinning your own pins: First, make sure you have made specific boards for each product category you have. Like if you have made a counting to 10 resource, you have a board specifically for counting activities. You will go to your store board, click on the counting to 10 product pin, and click "save" then save that pin to your new counting to 10 board.
- Pinning other's pins: Second, you need to add content from other people to your board. I would recommend looking for blog posts or non-product activities to place on your specific boards around your own product pins. Looking again at your counting to 10 board, look for blog posts that have counting to 10 ideas and strategies. Make sure all pins on your counting board are related to counting.
- How often should I pin: You should be pinning every. single. day. Pin around the same time each day. This is important so pinterest knows you are active and consistent. It is also recommended to only pin a specific pin once every 30 days. I use a scheduling program to do this for me. (Check out THIS POST for more on this program).
- When is my board complete?: I have not ever seen a board as complete, though it is recommended that each board have at least 10 pins. I keep adding to each of my boards as I see new pins that relate to each board.
Now you have your pins in your store board, you are repinning your pins from your store board to your more specific boards and now you want to get potential buyers to find your work.
- Following Others: One of the biggest strategies I have seen for gaining followers is to follow others in hopes they follow you back. While this is a good way to gain followers, I do not think it helps you gain buyers.
- Engaging Others: Another idea is to engage with those who are already repinning your content. When I see someone repin one of my products, I always check out the board they have placed my pin on. I will repin some of their pins that are relevant to my product boards as well as follow the board if it is a content area I am associated with.
- Advertising Boards: I have gained the most followers doing this. I use Facebook and other platforms to advertise my boards. I have a business Facebook page where I highlight one season specific board each month. I am also a member of several teacher share groups where I will high light some boards that are relevant to different discussion threads. If instance, if someone wants some spring crafts, I will link my spring themed Pinterest board for them to see specific ideas.
There are also collaborative boards on Pinterest where you can gain more reach for your pins. To join these boards, simply follow the instructions under the board's description. If you follow the board's rules, they can be a good way to bring additional traffic to your store.
